Subject: Open PCI device ID database Cease & Desist inappropriate
I am writing this letter as a computer/network technician, and a member
in good standing in the open source software community.
I have read the details of your Cease & Desist letter to Mr. Jim Boemler
regarding the freely available PCI device ID listing, and I find your
actions reprehsnsible.
As Mr. Boemler indicated, he has made contact with the PCI-SIG group
regarding this list during its creation and received no response at that
time. In light of this, I feel the threat of litigation was premature
and unwarranted. From my experience and limited knowledge of Mr.
Boemler, I believe him to be a reasonable individual who would have
worked towards an amicable solution to this 'issue', beneficial to all
parties involved.
While I appreciate the relatively calm tone of your letter, I find that
your strong-arm tactics are over-stepping the bounds of common decency
and professionalism, and see it as a black eye for the PCI-SIG group. I
can only hope you will reconsider and contact him personally to work
towards a solution.
I don't want to see the computer hardware industry hurt by your actions,
but I'm afraid that continuing on this path can lead to but one possible
outcome.
n.b. I will be making this letter publically available on my website as
record of my correspondance, and will be actively encouraging others to
communicate their feelings on this matter to you so that you may come to
understand the widespread repercussions of your actions.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my letter.
